Introduction to American Indian Astrology

Within the American Indian tradition we find the seeds of Astrology. The energy that we choose to use this lifetime by the time we are born, the animals and plants and minerals which are sacred to us creates a part of who we are.

Within the Indian Tradition, there is no word for Astrology; rather there is a sense of the energy of the season. So, use this and try to understand yourself and others in a new way (OR IS IT AN OLD WAY?).

We are all one with the earth, water, sky, and fire of creation. Sense and feel what it is that your soul wants you to be and use this with that intent of being the very best that you can be and honor the energy of who you are.

Time of the North

Is energy sacred to WABOOSE. The animal is the white buffalo, the season is winter, the time of day is Midnight, and the color is white. The powers of the North and are about purity and Renewal.

WINTER SOLSTICE...December 22, 2008

Dec 22nd through January 20th is the EARTH RENEWAL MOON, OR CAPRICORN. People born under this moon are Snow Goose people. They are respectful of authority. Their plant is the BIRCH tree, their color is WHITE and their mineral is Quartz and their clan is the TURTLE Clan (EARTH). Like the snow goose these folks are devoted to duty, can nip if provoked and are discriminating, prudent, industrious, perfectionists, and excellent organizers. This lifetime they need to learn to be a bit more humble and frivolous at times.

January 20th to Feb 18th is the REST and Cleansing Moon, AQUARIUS; people born under this moon are OTTER people. Their plant is the QUAKING ASPEN TREE, their color is SILVER and their mineral is SILVER & (AMETHYST) their elemental clan is the BUTTERFLY CLAN (AIR) Otter people are clever, bold, mercurial, they can really kick when cornered, normally they are helpful, humanitarian, practical and patient. They must learn to turn more of their dreams into reality and to be more adaptable.

GROUNDHOGS DAY IS THE midpoint of winter

February 18th through March 19th is the BIG WINDS moon. (PISCES) Water element. People born during this time are COUGAR people. Their plant is the PLANTAIN, their color is BLUE-GREEN, and their mineral is turquoise and their ELEMENTAL CLAN IS FROG CLAN. These folks, like the cougar are cautious, not willing to reveal themselves until they are sure of those around them, they are just, intuitive, gentle, creative people. Though they can have sharp claws if attacked. These people must learn how to have a greater sense of reality, and not be so easily hurt.

Time of the East

SPRING EQUINOX March 19th 2008

ARIES:::::::::: The Spirit keeper for the moons of the east is WABUN, the time of the east is about the EAGLE and the season is spring. The time of day is dawn and the colors are red and gold. The powers of the East are ILLUMINATION and WISDOM this year MARCH 19th until April 19th is the BUDDING TREES moon. People born under this moon are the RED HAWK people. Their plant is the Dandelion, their color is yellow and their stone is the fire opal, and their clan is the THUNDERBIRD Clan. Like the hawk, these folks are quick to fly into things, or out of them. They have clear vision, and their compliments like talons sometimes sting, they are far seeing, energetic, independent, strong willed, and need to learn more patience.

April 19th through May 20th is the FROGS RETURN MOON (earth) TAURUS

People born under this moon are the BEAVER people. Their plant is the BLUE CAMAS their color is BLUE and their stone is CHRYSOCOLLA. They are TURTLE CLAN. These people are hard working, orderly, home oriented and strong. They sometimes hold back their feelings as effectively as the beavers dam holds back the water. They are affectionate, self reliant, patient and stable. Beaver people sometimes need to curb their stubbornness and tendency to overindulge.

BELTANE OR MAY DAY IS THE CROSS POINT OF SPRING

May 20th through June 20th is the CORNPLANTING MOON. (GEMINI) AIR. People born under this moon are Deer people. Their plant is the YARROW, their colors are white and green and their stone is the moss agate. Their elemental clan is the BUTTERFLY Clan. They are clever, intuitive, alert, eager and resourceful. They like to create and enjoy beautiful things. They must learn to be more consistent and less suspicious.

Time of the South is Shawnodese

The animal is the coyote, the season is summer, the time of day is Midday, and the colors are yellow and green. The powers of the South are GROWTH & Trust.

SUMMER SOLSTICE June 20th 2008

June 20th 2008 to July 22nd is the STRONG SUN moon. People born under this moon are the FLICKER people. (CANCER) Water. Their plant is the WILD ROSE, their color is pink and their tone is the carnelian agate. Their clan is the FROG clan. Flicker people are able to silently and receptively ride with the flow of life. They are gentle, dreamy, sensitive people, able to both reflect and absorb things round them. They must learn to be more independent and less changeable.

July 22nd to August 22nd is the RIPE BERRIES MOON; People born at this time are STURGEON People. (LEO) Fire Their plant is the Raspberry, their color is RED, and their minerals are IRON and the Garnet. Their elemental clan is the THUNDERBIRD Clan. Like the sturgeon these folks have an inner strength and the ability to see through things. They try to avoid confrontations but will fight when cornered. They are active, dominant, powerful, courageous people although they have a playful side. They must learn to curb a tendency to be too dominant.

LAMMAS on AUGUST 1st is the 1/2 way midpoint of summer

August 22nd through September 22nd is the HARVEST MOON (VIRGO) Earth

And people born under this moon are BROWN BEAR people. Their color is purple, their planet is violet and their stone is the Amethyst. They belong to TURTLE CLAN and like the bear these folks are gentle, persevering, and curious. If you attack them you will find their claws will accurately rake any weak spots. Bear folks are Cool, capable creatures of habit who love work and duty and appear confident and courageous, learning to enjoy being around people and being sympathetic is part of their life path.

Time of the West is MUDJEKEEWIS

The animal is the Grizzly bear, the season is autumn, and the time of day is sunset, and the colors of the west are blue and black. People born during this time are learning strength and introspection

September 22, 2008 is AUTUMNAL EQUINOX

From September 22nd to October 22nd is the time of DUCKS FLY MOON (Libra) AIR, People born under this moon are the RAVEN people. Their plant is the MULLEN and their color is brown, their stone is Jasper and their clan is the Butterfly clan. Like the raven, these people are group oriented, and concerned with the welfare of others. They have the ability to search out hidden things but will withdraw at any sign of danger. They are cooperative, intilligent, adaptable and loyal. They must learn to take on more responsibility and to be less gullible.

October 22nd to November 21st is the FREEZE up moon; people born under this moon are the SNAKE people. (SCORPIO) Water... Their plant is the THISTLE and their color is Orange, their minerals are copper and malachite, and their clan is FROG clan. They are a bit secretive, have great wisdom and tenacity and a painful bite when provoked to attack. They are powerful, ambitious, heroic and determined, being less swift to bite and less suspicious is part of their life path.

The 1/2-point of autumn is SAMHAIN or Halloween

November 21st through December 21st is the LONG snows moon. People born during this time are ELK people. Their Plant is the Black Spruce, their color is black, their mineral Obsidian... Like the elk they like high places, physically or otherwise as well as solitude. They are watchful for others and trumpet loudly if they sense injustice. They are determined, insightful, independent, fearless, determined and open hearted. They can be a bit argumentative, so they must learn to be more giving and understanding.

Fire is action. Water is emotions. Air is ideas and communications …Earth is about building

The purpose of Astrology and all esoteric sciences are to better understand yourself and others. By using a sense of the season, and the time of year, which is part of your map, you will truly better be able to create whatever you want with your life.

Instead of being cursed by a fated life, rather realize that we all have tremendous free will and just perhaps that free will extended to you creating and choosing the time of year and the exact minute you would incarnate into this body.
